Regional
capabilities on Seismic Risk Reduction
The experience of countries affected by moderate to high -
intensity earthquakes, has resulted in significant capacities
and knowledge which could be shared with the entire region in
order to reduce the economic damages and human losses in the
region. Existing research centers, academic institutions,
Non-Governmental Organizations, specialists and risk reduction
management centers in the countries of the region are examples
of inter-related capabilities. The social, cultural and
geographical commonalities of countries in the region, will
contribute to the promotion of information and knowledge sharing
amongst nations and communities of the region.
However, in order to ensure effective planning and
implementation for reducing the negative impact of seismic risk
on the countries of the region, there is need for long term risk
reduction approach and preventive programmes which contributes
to reducing vulnerabilities of people, communities and nations
by strengthening their resilience against seismic risks and
hazards as recommended by Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015:
Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters.
